I wanted to be technical. I wanted to be complex. I wanted to make my act a hard act to follow. Bottom line.
Six lines, half lyrics and half interviews. The lyrics all come from Ill Street Blues, a survival song with soles winking and a shrinking t-shirt, and the tags are street, pain and struggle. The three interview lines, two from Rolling Stone and one from AllHipHop in 2008, shift to craft: wanting to be technical and complex, still liking to talk street, and being told he was ahead of his time.
A lot of people did say I was ahead of my time, especially back then. The times have finally caught up now.
You're not promised tomorrow in this Little Shop of Horrors
Soles on my shoes winking, t-shirt is shrinking
I'm right in front of my front steps thinking of a plan
Looking like Raggedy Ann, no dough in hand, kicking a can
I love the art of being able to still talk that gangsta shit, the street shit and still do it in a different way
